Auf dem Friedhof Zhalan in Beijing ist ein Grabstein aufgestellt, dessen lateinische und chinesische Inschrift an einen Mann erinnert, der heimisch in der Fremde wurde, seiner Heimat dagegen fremd blieb – Johannes Schreck - chin. Deng Yuhan Hanpo.
[In the Zhalan burial site in Beijing is a gravestone with Latin and Chinese inscriptions. It marks the final resting place of Johannes Schreck, or as he is known by his Chinese name, Deng Yuhan Hanpo. He was a great man who left his homeland in Germany and found a new life in China in the early 17th century.]
„Der deutsche Pater Johannes ... ein hervorragender Gelehrter auf allen Gebieten der Wissenschaft und von einer echten, unbeugsamen Aufrichtigkeit, beschloss, während er die chinesische Kalenderreform in die Wege leitete, sein Leben in Peking am 11. Mai 1630 im 54. Lebensjahr.“

Er war der erste, der das moderne heliozentrische Weltverständnis im Ming-Reich popularisierte, zu einer Zeit, da die Inquisition in Rom Galileo Galilei ihre Folterwerkzeuge zeigte. Schreck brachte Galileis Fernrohr mit und das kopernikanische Weltbild, wie er ebenso auf anderen Gebieten der Naturwissenschaften, der Medizin oder der Mathematik, einen Brückenschlag zwischen den Kulturen wagte, den Wissenstransfer von West nach Ost und umgekehrt initiierte. Manches Indiz gibt es, dass Schrecks plötzlicher Tot diesem Wagnis geschuldet ist.
[He promoted and popularized a modern understanding of the contemporary world and the cosmos during the Ming dynasty. This was underway at the same time that the Inquisition was using torture to further its official religious agenda and to impose a rigid set of beliefs on parts of Europe. Johannes Schreck brought Galileo’s telescope and his modern views of the world to China as he engaged by himself in a unique cross-cultural exchange that impacted the fields of science, medicine and mathematics. His significant contribution to the transfer of knowledge between West and East, and, East and West places him in the company of an elite few. There is evidence that his death at a relatively young age resulted from the sheer scope and vigorous intensity of his undertaking.]
